A Little Manifesto & Some Inspiration from our Mothers

Technology is a wonderful thing, but as with all progress, something good is inevitably lost. The internet may be shrinking the gap between humans and human intelligence (read: instant access to information), but it's also changing the way we relate to one another. Socializing can now be done in such a distant, convenience-based manner, it almost doesn't require togetherness at all. What's more, the majority of thoughts and ideas being exchanged through social outlets online are gradually losing depth and meaning.

In rebellion – and also because I like crafts – I created the Monthly Maker's Melange. I wanted to enable a space for community. A space where togetherness and creativity, instead of judgment and garrulity, would be central. A space where words could flow out of the moment, but would not be missed. Where everyone could feel like a part of the whole, even without speech. Just like the quilters of generations past, I want to have my friends close at hand and I want to make use of my hands (for more than just typing).

The first craft night was an impromptu Mother's Day card rally. I hadn't yet had the idea to make it a regular meeting. But everyone had such an enjoyable time, we couldn't help but yearn for more.

And so the Monthly Maker's Melange came to be.

Here are our very first creations:
